Location: outskirts of Cardiff

Rating: 8️⃣.2️⃣

Nestled in the Vale of Glamorgan is this lovely 36 hole resort with 2 very nice courses! The National course is the signature of the two and is a challenge at 7,400 yards. A real nice mix of different holes, set in tranquility, lined with trees with a fair share of water.

Location: 5 mins from Royal Porthcrawl

Rating: 8️⃣.5️⃣

This part of Wales is really blessed with some awesome golf courses and Pyle & Kenfig is another one of those. A front 9 weaving through wispy grass with beautifully manicured fairways leads onto a back 9, nestled in the dunes, with a stretch of holes from 11-16 that are some of the best you will play. Highly highly recommend!

Location: between Swansea & Cardiff

Rating: 8️⃣.4️⃣

Southerndown sits on top of the cliffs on the south coast of Wales and offers a pretty unique golfing experience. The course is not far off a large sheep pen, who roam the land and keep the fairways in check. Holes run through narrow channels in between bushes where you might even find a sheep hiding. Around the southern perimeter you have stunning views of the Welsh coastline. A tough test but one worth visiting and the friendliest of members invited us for a beer and a chat after.

A course well established in the worlds top 100 and one of the best manicured I have played but wasn’t overawed by it to be honest. It was incredibly difficult, narrow fairways lined by thick rough, blind shots with not much of a landing area, didn’t really make for that enjoyable an experience. Golf is hard enough as it is, at least make it playable and I thought I was hitting the ball well on the day 😂

Wrapping up the Celtic Manor experience with their signature Ryder Cup course. 2nd best of the 3 courses in my opinion. Bit of a flat start with the first 8 or 9 holes settled in the valley but once you get onto the back 9 it really gets interesting and what a stunning view and hole to finish on!

After my morning 18 and a quick pint I headed out onto the Roman Roads course at Celtic Manor. Not quite as memorable as the Montgomery course but still a pleasant experience. Bit wider and longer. Sadly had to walk off after 12 as the waiting times were horrendous, there were 3 groups on 1 tee box at one point so called it a day.

After a short trip from Burnham & Berrow I travelled up to Newport for a couple of days at Celtic Manor. You’d recognise the name from the 2010 Ryder Cup. It is a resort with 3 very good courses. The Montgomery Course was my favourite of the 3, despite not being their marquee one it was the most fun and had the most interesting and varying holes.

After playing the 9 hole Channel course in the morning @golfing_alman and I settled into some lunch before heading out onto the Championship course on a breezy afternoon. Tough front 9 with the wind blowing across the course from the left but as we turned it played more into my cut/slice. Lovely course, really fun design with loads of unique and tough holes and in awesome condition. Thanks again to Alex for hosting me for the day!!

Last stop on this Scotland trip, well done to the old man on doing 4 rounds in 4 days despite much whinging he wouldn’t be able to. The 3rd course of Carnoustie with more of a parkland vibe to it, nice change up from the links courses throughout the week and blessed with some unreal weather. Scotland isn’t as bad as people think!

After a blustery morning down in St Andrews we headed up north of the River Tay to a little gem called Panmure. Nestled in a strip of golf courses starting at Monifieth and ending at Carnoustie, Panmure is a lovely, quaint course with lots of character and some of the purest greens I’ve played on. The course has a great blend of a nice gentle starting building up to some tricky and interesting holes with little humps and bumps all the way through. Really fun course and had the best weather for it!

A privilege to be able to play the Old course with my old man! Been top of the bucket list for a long time and finally got to do it. Every bit as good as I’d imagined and what an aurora around the town. Absolutely loved it and would go back in a heartbeat! Oh and 3 putted the last to not break 80 😂

Honestly the best scenery I’ve had on a golf course to date. Rolling hills, palms trees, views over Victoria reservoir and of course a stray dog. Stunning stunning course, not in the best condition and expensive for the region but what a beautiful walk! It’s a bloody difficult course, very narrow and a ton of bush but would 100% recommend!

Roughly translated as Little England, Nuwara Eliya is best known for being home to many of Sri Lanka’s tea plantations as the British brought their trade across. The course itself was established in 1889 and has that colonial feel with a beautiful old clubhouse. It’s nestled in the heart of the city and is a one of the most peculiar courses I’ve ever played, zig zagging through the city. On the one hole you’re dodging tuktuks and having to avoid power lines and others neighbour the Presidential palace. Whilst intriguing the condition of the course was poor, the greens in particular. Definitely a course I’ll struggle to forget!

What a stunning resort and even better golf course! Hambantota is a bit out of the way of most tourists in Sri Lanka but this @shangrilahambantota resort is a little bit of paradise. It’s a very cool design and has 100’s of coconut trees throughout. The caddy even had a helmet in the back of the buggy just in case. It’s very hot though, that’s a very sweaty back you can see in the second pic, had to take a break after 10 holes to cool down 😰

Who takes their clubs on a holiday to Sri Lanka? This guy! First of 4 courses I played on my trip. Established in 1879 it definitely has an old colonial feel to it and was set up by the British. Very quirky layout in the middle of the city with a train line passing through, plenty of stray dogs and dudes wading through all the bodies of water searching for balls. Bloody hot, could barely get up the 18th even having teed off at 6:30 in the morning to avoid the heat. Overpriced in my opinion but an interesting experience nonetheless.

Another beautiful course in Durban ticked off the list. Bit less bushy than Zimbali the day before but equally as hilly! How’s that set up of bunkers on the par 4, 6th hole! Fairways not too tight and course in great condition made it a thoroughly enjoyable round!

Took a scenic drive down from Swaziland to Durban to go visit family and finally got round to playing Zimbali. Beautiful course, very well looked after and set in thick tropical Durban bush. Fairways are generous enough to offer respite from the bush. Really nice set up and great course worth playing!
