My favourite of the 4 courses I played on this trip. Maybe it was the back to back birdies to start that do the trip but from the moment you arrive it has an aurora about it. Stunning clubhouse, impeccable conditioning and a really fun design moving through the rolling hills of South Belfast. Not much more to add than an awesome golf destination!

Location: Ballymena, Northern Ireland

Rating: 8️⃣.0️⃣

After being washed out at Galgorm Castle a few years ago I was stoked to be able to go back and this time @jsmiller41 and I had the best weather! Really lovely resort and course, very well maintained, some pretty tricky and challenging holes with not a lot of room for error. The course is very flat though so easily walkable.

If you know you know… home of RM! I envisioned Holywood being a relatively flat parkland course but it is anything but. Two totally different loops, both hugely undulating. The first is relatively open, working its way up and down the hill with a few quirky par 3’s. The back 9 gets even better, weaving through parts of thicker bush with more individual holes and gets a fair amount trickier. I wasn’t expecting much but it’s a really fun course and an absolute steal to play Rory’s home course for only £35!

Location: east coast of Norfolk

Rating: 8️⃣.3️⃣

Last stop on this edition of the Highland Invitational and after being in the lead with 2 rounds to go I ended 1 point off last 😂 nice to finish off with the shanks!

The course though is great, a traditional out and back in routing as opposed to Royal Cromer we played a few days before which is just up the road. The two complement each other perfectly and would highly recommend playing both! On a windy day it would be brutal but we were lucky with a light drizzle and some clouds. We’d never thought of Norfolk as a golfing destination but it has a few gems and doesn’t have the huge price tag that comes with the top 100 name tag.

Fresh off my lowest round, a few pints and watching the Aussies choke against the Lions we took on the Valley course. A much tougher, incredibly tight course which requires much more thought than brute force. We played the first 6 holes in torrential rain which didn’t help things either. Some crazy tee shots trying to cut through swathes of trees. Tough course, complete opposite to the Valley course we’d played in the morning.

Day 4 of our trip and for some of the group, their favourite course we played. With howling winds and a bit of rain the conditions were brutal! Hunstanton is a really fun course, loads of unique holes, nothing too drastic just a genuinely good links course that really challenges every part of your game. We could’ve done with more info on the blind par 3 but everyone was incredibly hospitable!

An old club on a new course. Royal Norwich moved to their new premises in 2019 and not that I know the old course but I’m sure their members would be delighted with this new one. A short drive from the city, nestled in the woods it is a tough test at almost 5,900 meters with significant bunkering, sloping fairways and large multi-tiered greens with some really enticing holes like the back to back drivable par 4s on the back 9. Coupled with a modern clubhouse and excellent practice facilities it is a really good option if you’re in the Norfolk area.

An old club on a new course. Royal Norwich moved to their new premises in 2019 and not that I know the old course but I’m sure their members would be delighted with this new one. First stop on this year’s Highland Invitational with a challenging round in Thetford. A very pretty woodland course with fairways lined with tall pines trees. Really cool design, pretty lengthy and limited room for error and could be a real hidden gem if it was better looked after. The fairways were in pretty rough condition.

Situated just to the north of the city and nestled in between Houtrak and Spaarnwoude, I’d say this course is the best quality you’ll get in and around the city. Great conditioning and very good facilities it is probably the nicest course in the area but comes at a price I’m not sure is great value.

Location: Utrecht

Rating: 8️⃣.3️⃣

Back to the Netherlands and with the weather looking the way it was I thought I’d call up De Pan and tick off another one of the top Dutch courses, this one actually rated in the top 100 in the world by some sites.

It is a beautiful heathland course, with a wonderful routing. You barely leave the last green before you’re on the next tee box. It looks tricky but under those isn’t thick rough but pine cones and trimmed grass do doesn’t play too difficult.

Not convinced it is a top 100 course in the world, the high green fee and the average condition is quite disappointing but it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Back to the Netherlands and with the weather looking the way it was I thought I’d call up De Pan and tick off another one of the top Dutch courses, this one actually rated in the top 100 in the world by some sites.

Location: Drakensberg Mountains

Growing up in Durban, we used to come to Hlalanathi every December for a camping holiday and this was our first trip back for 17 years. Memories of my childhood came flooding back! The course is exactly as how I remembered it with a brutal uphill 500 meter par 5 to finish and mountain views all round. Bit beaten up by the heavy rains at this time of year but still thoroughly enjoyable to go back!

Growing up in Durban, we used to come to Hlalanathi every December for a camping holiday and this was our first trip back for 17 years. Memories of my childhood came flooding back! The course is exactly as how I remembered it with a brutal uphill 500 meter par 5 to finish and mountain views all round. Bit beaten up by the heavy rains at this time of year but still thoroughly enjoyable to go back!

Landed at 7am, made it to Dubai Creek for an 8:15 shotgun start and managed to sneak in 18. Dubai Creek is set in the heart of the city and runs alongside the river in what is a lovely design in a bustling metropolis with some of the best manicured greens and fairways but sadly lacks the tranquility of a course in the countryside.

A stunning parkland course and very much able to play for foreigners visiting the city.

A tough, challenging course but thoroughly enjoyable with one of the hardest holes I’ve played in the stroke index 1 and also one of the best halfway houses I’ve seen.

With water shortages in Jo’burg they basically were only looking after the greens hence the extremely dry looking fairways but it wasn’t too bad, the drives just went that extra yard further. Not gonna complain about that.

Steyn City is a place like nowhere I’ve been before. A concept of the late Douw Steyn, he built a city of his own just to the north of Johannesburg with every amenity a rich person could want. Golf course, equestrian centre and even a helipad. A secure, walled city for the affluent.

Built in 2015, the course is very new but a wonderful design. They did amazingly well to bed the course into the natural contours of the land providing huge changes in elevation and plenty of twists and turns and in immaculate condition to boot.

Absolutely must play both courses if you’re visiting Royal Johannesburg.

After playing the East course in the morning and a bite to eat at the clubhouse, I set out onto the the West course and it was equally as good as the East course which is their championship one. In exactly the same condition, it is a fairly similar design but maybe a has a few more scenic holes without the backdrop of some office blocks that the East course has. Absolutely must play both courses if you’re visiting Royal Johannesburg.

The Verdura Resort is a stunning location for a golf course, set right on the Mediterranean Sea. The resort has 2 courses but sadly we only had time for one. Was passing through Suffolk for a wedding and called up Aldeburgh for a round and how pleased was I that I did. A very traditional golf club where long socks are still worn when wearing shorts and a quirky par 68 with a net and a putting green as the practice facilities but a course full of intrigue and challenge. I loved the wooden sleepers as the walls for the bunkers and some excellent, tricky holes.

A front 9 weaving through wispy grass with beautifully manicured fairways leads onto a back 9, nestled in the dunes, with a stretch of holes from 11-16 that are some of the best you will play. Highly highly recommend!

Southerndown sits on top of the cliffs on the south coast of Wales and offers a pretty unique golfing experience. The course is not far off a large sheep pen, who roam the land and keep the fairways in check. Holes run through narrow channels in between bushes where you might even find a sheep hiding. Around the southern perimeter you have stunning views of the Welsh coastline. A tough test but one worth visiting and the friendliest of members invited us for a beer and a chat after.

A course well established in the worlds top 100 and one of the best manicured I have played but wasn’t overawed by it to be honest. It was incredibly difficult, narrow fairways lined by thick rough, blind shots with not much of a landing area, didn’t really make for that enjoyable an experience. Golf is hard enough as it is, at least make it playable and I thought I was hitting the ball well on the day 😂

Wrapping up the Celtic Manor experience with their signature Ryder Cup course. 2nd best of the 3 courses in my opinion. Bit of a flat start with the first 8 or 9 holes settled in the valley but once you get onto the back 9 it really gets interesting and what a stunning view and hole to finish on!

After my morning 18 and a quick pint I headed out onto the Roman Roads course at Celtic Manor. Not quite as memorable as the Montgomery course but still a pleasant experience. Bit wider and longer. Sadly had to walk off after 12 as the waiting times were horrendous, there were 3 groups on 1 tee box at one point so called it a day.

After a short trip from Burnham & Berrow I travelled up to Newport for a couple of days at Celtic Manor. You’d recognise the name from the 2010 Ryder Cup. It is a resort with 3 very good courses. The Montgomery Course was my favourite of the 3, despite not being their marquee one it was the most fun and had the most interesting and varying holes.

After playing the 9 hole Channel course in the morning @golfing_alman and I settled into some lunch before heading out onto the Championship course on a breezy afternoon. Tough front 9 with the wind blowing across the course from the left but as we turned it played more into my cut/slice. Lovely course, really fun design with loads of unique and tough holes and in awesome condition. Thanks again to Alex for hosting me for the day!!

Last stop on this Scotland trip, well done to the old man on doing 4 rounds in 4 days despite much whinging he wouldn’t be able to. The 3rd course of Carnoustie with more of a parkland vibe to it, nice change up from the links courses throughout the week and blessed with some unreal weather. Scotland isn’t as bad as people think!
