Newmachar is a beautifully crafted golf course in a foresty area half an hour outside of Aberdeen. If you’re wanting something different from the coast lined with links courses get yourself down here.

The first is a gentle start with an iron shot to lay up before the water in front of the green from there you start to work your way through the tree lined fairways. All the holes are pretty unique, they tend to twist and turn through the forest with subtle changes in direction & elevation of the fairway as you go along. I think my favourite hole would have to be the 9th, such a pretty, well-manicured par 3 from an elevated tee hitting down in front of the club house with water on the right-hand side.

The fairways were in good condition without being outstanding but thought the greens were really good, think they were preparing for a challenge tour event a week or two later. Generally it was such a nice peaceful environment to play in and the members seemed overly friendly, they were eager to let me through as a one ball where at some other courses they’re often more stubborn about it.

The practice facilities were pretty good, there’s a driving range as well as putting/chipping areas to warm up and the pro shop was well stocked as well. I think £60 is well worth a round of golf here.
