Ombria was the first stop on my latest trip to Portugal and it didn’t disappoint. The course is very new, only opening earlier this year and there is some construction going on around the resort to finish the accommodation and some of the other surrounding buildings but the golf course is fully up and running.
The course comprises of two very contrasting 9 hole loops. The first 9 bobs and weaves utilises the natural streams and contours on one side of the clubhouse with a couple of tee boxes carved into the hill which provide some stunning views and a couple of cool shots. The back 9 is has more tree lined fairways and a bit more open with holes neighbouring each other. I felt it had a bit more of a safari type feel. The overall condition of the course was good, the fairways were okay and will only get better in time and the greens were quite hard and ran pretty quick.
The whole resort will be beautiful once the construction is complete, very much looking forward to returning one day!
The practice facilities are quite limited at the moment. There is a small putting/chipping green but I understand that they have a driving range in the making so we’ll see how that comes along. They have a nice little pro shop and a terrace with views overlooking the front 9.
At €159 a round for a guest it is on the more expensive side. I’d quite like to come back and see how that fares once things are fully up and running but it is a lovely setting for a round of golf!
